One fan collates several separate interviews of the Game of Thrones cast looking uneasy when asked about the quality of the show’s final season. With only one more episode left before the HBO juggernaut show wraps up its eight-year run, fans have shared their varying opinions about how the final season is shaping up. And unlike previous years, the reactions are more divisive, with a significant chunk of loyal viewers doubting whether or not creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will deliver a satisfying ending to the fantastical series.
Game of Thrones season 8 took a bit of a wait after season 7 wrapped up summer of 2017. Despite only having six episodes, the series makes up for it for extended 20-minute runtimes for its final four outings. But with five episodes in, this season isn’t as smooth-running as its predecessors with fans airing various grievances with how it’s handled. The first major backlash came after episode 3, “The Long Night,” where many argued that it was just too dark to know what’s going on. The defensive response from the cinematographer Fabian Wagner made things worse as he suggested that fans calibrate their TVs to be able to properly watch the show. Last week, the Starbucks debacle was the talk of the town after a coffee cup from the popular cafe made an appearance in “The Last of Starks,” which the show producers chalked to an error. But outside of the technicalities, fans are particularly irked with the way the narrative has been developed this season,
Given that knowledge now, a YouTube channel named Dankius M. Meme collected a slew of past interviews of the Game of Thrones stars being asked how they feel about the final season of the HBO project. Most of them, including Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), uneasily answered the question, while Kit Harington (Jon Snow) blatantly called it “disappointing.” Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), meanwhile, particularly cited how bad Tyrion’s suggestion was to have all the elders, women and children down in the crypt while the Battle of Winterfell took place knowing that the Night Kings’ shtick is to resurrect dead people and make them White Walkers. In terms of story, many fans aren’t exactly thrilled with how the characters seem to be repeatedly making senseless decisions, which counters the very idea of the show being a political-fantasy series. As much as the threat of the Night King and the White Walkers had been a central issue its debut, many are more invested in the actual Game of Thrones and the mystery of who ultimately sits on the Iron Throne once the dust settles. But it’s difficult to lean in on the politics of the show if the characters aren’t exactly making well-thought-out moves. It’s worth noting that at this point, the show’s narrative has gone beyond what was written in George R.R. Martin’s books in A Song of Ice and Fire novels, so there’s really no basis for where the series is heading now.
There’s only 80 minutes left of Game of Thrones and the trailer for the show’s final episode barely reveals anything but how the aftermath of this week’s outing will be received by the remaining characters. It’s safe to say that the series is finished with big battles that involved massive armies, meaning its last outing will be more character-focused. Daenerys has won the battle to claim the Iron Throne, but that doesn’t mean that at the end of it all, she’ll remain there with more and more people starting to doubt her ability to rule Westeros.
