Game of Thrones returns to the small screen this summer, and Jorah Mormont actor, Iain Glen, discusses his own potential involvement. Game of Thrones’ seventh, and second-to-last, season is the beginning of the end for the show, as all the remaining contenders for the Iron Throne start to come together for a final showdown, with Jon Snow (Kit Harrington), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) being the three major players right now. This is also the season that Daenerys finally returns to Westeros, having spent the first six seasons across the sea, first with the Dothraki, then building her own kingdom, and always with Jorah Mormont at her side (or trying to get back to it).
Jorah Mormont has been a major part of Daenerys’s story since season 1, but at the end of season 6, she sent him away (again) to find a cure for the greyscale that he is now infected with. She tells him to find a cure, and then return to her side. As a result, there has been some speculation about how much of a role Jorah will have in season 7, but now Iain Glen has teased a little about what we might see.
In an interview with Stuff, Glen talks about his role on the show, and as well as mentioning how much he loves playing the character, he refers to the high body count on Game of Thrones, and the possibility that he may not make it through to the end of season 8.
If his end is close, it is likely that it will be connected to his infection with greyscale, as it is currently something that is considered incurable. He also told Daenerys when he took his leave of her that if he couldn’t find a cure, he would kill himself before becoming one of the stone men.
I’ve always enjoyed playing Jorah. It’s been a role that’s been good to me so far. … There’s quite a high death count in Game Of Thrones and they don’t blanch at removing favourite characters. They just get rid of them in a brutal way. My end may well be close but so far I’m doing OK.
As heartbreaking as it would be to see Jorah meet such an ignominious end, the show is known for brutal deaths (and characters dying too soon). At this point, everyone left on the show has done an impressive job of surviving, and if Jorah makes it through to the end of this season, he’s still doing better than most of the nobles in Westeros!
Of course, this in no way confirms that Jorah is due to die anytime soon - Glen is simply mentioning that it may be on the horizon, which is true of every character in the show. He’s still alive in the books, so it’s always possible that he will manage to find that cure (possibly with a visit to the Citadel in Hightower) and return to his beloved Daenerys for a happy ending… although happy endings are scarce in Westeros.
