Former Game of Thrones co-stars Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke were reunited at this year’s Oscars ceremony. After a turbulent build-up fraught with controversies, the 2019 Oscars received an unsurprisingly mixed response, with the no-host format attracting plenty of praise but the Academy being roundly criticized for awarding Best Picture to the divisive Green Book. Spike Lee in particular has been vocal in his opposition to the decision. Generally, however, the Oscars were business as usual and featured the usual selection of Hollywood’s finest in attendance, including Game of Thrones stars Jason Momoa and Emilia Clarke.
While neither actor was nominated for any of the night’s gongs, Momoa has had a particularly successful year starring in the DCEU’s Aquaman. The superhero character failed to make much of a splash in his Justice League debut, but James Wan’s solo movie went on to become one of the franchise’s biggest hits, both critically and commercially, and Momoa’s turn as Arthur Curry played a big role in that achievement. With no Game of Thrones season in 2018, Emilia Clarke had a relatively quiet year on the small screen, but did play a key role in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Of course, both Momoa and Clarke first came to prominence in HBO’s Game of Thrones, playing Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen respectively. The two characters formed an unlikely couple in GOT’s early seasons until Drogo’s tragic death, but Daenerys has gone from strength-to-strength and still wields the influence of her former husband. To the delight of Game of Thrones fans, Momoa posted a photo on his official Instagram account of a red carpet Oscars reunion with Emilia Clarke, as the duo enjoyed the glitz and glamor of the occasion.
Momoa and Clarke’s on-screen romance may have ended some time ago, but their story is still remembered fondly by Game of Thrones fans as one of the most genuine and compelling relationships of the entire show that wasn’t between family members. This popularity is at least partly due to the strong on-screen chemistry between Momoa and Clarke and the duo’s friendship clearly remains to this day.
Interestingly, the reunion between Momoa and Clarke may not be restricted to glitzy award shows. In the build up to Game of Thrones’ forthcoming final season, various reports have suggested that Momoa’s Khal Drogo will make some kind of return. This could come in the form of a flashback, dream sequence or indeed as a fully-fledged revival, but if the rumors prove accurate, many fans would surely appreciate one final farewell from one of Game of Thrones’ most memorable figures.
