Sandra Oh and Jay Duplass are set to star in The Chair, an upcoming Netflix series executive produced by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Last August, news broke that Benioff and Weiss had signed a huge exclusive deal to write, direct, and produce both movies and television for the streaming service. The deal, reportedly worth $250 million, made headlines at the time for several reasons. It was the end result of a bidding war between several major studios, which competed for content from the duo. It was part of a larger trend, with similarly massive contracts given to the likes of Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy. In the case of Benioff and Weiss specifically, however, the Netflix gig arrived after a particularly contentious response to the last season of Game of Thrones and particularly the final episode.

In October, it was announced that Benioff and Weiss would be walking away from a planned Star Wars trilogy, which they were slated to write and produce. Although talk of creative differences with Lucasfilm bubbled up to the surface, the official reason was that Benioff and Weiss had a packed schedule. For a multitude of reasons, from the duo’s history to the expectations they bring, many have wondered and speculated about what their first scripted Netflix project might be. Benioff and Weiss had previously co-directed Leslie Jones: Time Machine, a standup special headlined by the Saturday Night Live veteran.

According to Deadline, a six-part half-hour dramedy, titled The Chair, will be Benioff and Weiss’ inaugural series for Netflix. Created by Amanda Peet, The Chair is slated to star Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh and revolve around the Chair of an English Department at a major university. Jay Duplass, of Transparent and The Mindy Project, is set to co-star. Oh will also serve as an executive producer, along with Benioff and Weiss. Peet will executive produce as well, in addition to her roles as writer and showrunner.

Peet is known primarily as a famous actress, with a number of performances across the big and small screen. The Chair marks her first attempt at being a showrunner, though she has written a number of plays including “The Commons of Pensacola” and “Our Very Own Carlin McCullough”.

Given that Peet is at the forefront of the Netflix series, it’s possible that Benioff and Weiss won’t be as involved in the dramedy’s creative process. Still, their names will definitely bring a bit of added attention to the project. It seems from the brief description to be a departure from Game of Thrones, but it’s easy to imagine that The Chair will focus on academic animosities which lead to all kinds of battles and scheming.
