Game of Thrones has been a huge hit with millions of viewers. So many fans have invested a lot in this series, so it’s no wonder why expectations were high going into the series finale. While of course opinions are mixed and each person has their own feelings, there is a general consensus that the last couple of episodes haven’t been up to Game of Thrones’ standard. Many fans were disappointed in the series finale and felt many of the storylines fell short. Here are the 10 things fans are most upset about from the series finale.
All of the Dropped Threads
This is a general overall point that encompasses many of the smaller moments and concerns fans still have. Many fans have pointed out there were many storylines and foreshadowed moments that never seemed to come true. Some examples of this include Jon Snow’s resurrection and his parentage seemingly meaning nothing in the end. Other smaller examples include the fact that that white horse Arya met in the second to last episode was apparently just a cinematography moment.
Arya Not Getting To Completely Fulfill Her Prophecy
Speaking of dropped threads, many fans are let down by Arya not getting to completely fulfill her prophecy. While she did get to kill the Night King this season, many fans were hoping she would get to kill Cersei or even Daenerys. On top of that, many fans have pointed out that the entire storyline where Arya learned how to become no one from the Faceless Men barely amounted to anything. Fans were hoping to see more from this, but overall are happy Arya gets a happy ending.
Jon Snow’s Ending
Jon Snow’s ending has many people confused. Whether you liked Jon Snow or not, many people can agree that his conclusion in the series is strange. Game of Thrones spent so much time setting Jon Snow up as having the most legitimate claim to the throne, but for some reason, all of this buildup seemed to amount to nothing whatsoever. Jon is sent back to the Night’s Watch, which is another point we will get more into later, and then goes north with Tormund and the Wildlings. His whole setup in the story isn’t really paid off.
How Daenerys Died
This moment is one that many people have mixed feelings about. Many people are still upset by how her story went in this season entirely. They felt that her descent into becoming the Mad Queen was rushed and that things weren’t handled well. On top of this, they felt her death by Jon Snow’s own hand was not what they were hoping for. Many fans had hoped to see her die by Arya’s hand and felt the romantic moment between Jon and Daenerys was a strange way to go with her death.
The Ending Felt Anti-Climactic
Endings are often the most difficult part of telling a story. This can be especially true with television series. With a show like Game of Thrones that has had so many epic moments, truly sticking the landing on the ending was never going to be easy. In general, many fans feel that the ending, while it had some good moments, was somewhat anticlimactic. They were hoping for an ending that brought more of the storylines and unanswered questions together and that didn’t turn out to be the case.
The Lack of Diversity In The Small Council
At the end of the series, we see the return of the small council. Many fans were deeply disappointed in how there wasn’t a lot of diversity here. Even after having so many amazing female characters, we are left with only a small handful of them at the end of the series. While Brienne is included on this council, a place she definitely deserves, everyone else is a man. While most people are glad to see Tyrion as Hand of the King, having characters like Bronn get a seat is somewhat disappointing.
The Fact That There is Still a Wall
One question many fans have is why there is even still a need for a wall in the north anyway. The show seemed to get rid of all of the reasons why the wall existed in the first place. Winterfell and the Wildlings are now able to work together, and the White Walker threat has been eliminated. There also doesn’t seem to be much of a need for the Night’s Watch anymore, so exiling Jon to be a part of them again seemed like a strange movie.
The Conclusion of Cersei’s Story
While this point didn’t exactly occur in this episode, the conclusion of it did. It was confirmed in the finale that Jaime and Cersei died by being crushed in the rubble. Fans are upset that this was really how Cersei died. Obviously, she is an evil and cruel person, but many fans wanted a more dramatic death for her. The entire thing seemed very anticlimactic.
Problems With Diversity in General
The overall complaint that many fans have is how the ending struggle with telling diverse stories. There is only one person of color left, Greyworm, who has a significant role, leaving many fans upset with the lack of representation. Plus, while there were many women vying for the throne all along, the throne didn’t go to a woman. Fans were happy to see Sansa become Queen of an independent North, but they were upset that the show really only has three main female characters left at the end.
Bran Becoming King
The biggest surprise for most people of the finale was having Bran be named King of Westeros. This seemed to come from out of nowhere, and the fact that Tyrion, who was a prisoner, made this suggestion is even stranger. While Bran was set up through the first few seasons to be influential, ever since he became the Three-Eyed Raven, the show hasn’t used him for anything that seemed to have long-term impact. Fans are confused about why Bran would make a good ruler when he’s shown no interest in being a part of humankind in the last couple of seasons.
