Fyre Festival’s event producer, Andy King, admits he originally wanted his infamous scene cut from the Netflix documentary. The sidekick-turned-hero of Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened became famous for sharing a shocking story from the catastrophic festival that ended up becoming the most talked about moment from the film.
The festival was organized by Billy McFarland and Ja Rule with intent to promote the Fyre music app. Influencers on social media such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin, and Rose Bertram were paid to post photos with a Fyre hashtag on their Instagrams with drinks in hand and laying on a beach to boost pre-sale tickets. Despite the allusive marketing, young people across the country dropped thousands of dollars for a chance to attend Fyre Festival. What they encountered when they arrived, however, will be a story they will spend the rest of their lives talking about - and not in a good way.
Even those who have not seen Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened are aware of Andy King and his infamous water story. A producer of the Fyre event, King fought with every fiber of his being to try to keep the festival on track. As shared in the documentary, this includes a time when King accepted to exchange favors of a sexual nature in order to acquire bottled Evian water for the festival attendees. According to TMZ, King begged the producers to remove that interview from the film. He even thought it would never be used in the first place. The director, however, had other plans and the creative decision to keep the scene in the doc led to King becoming a famous internet meme.
Since the release of the documentary, King has used his social media success to start a GoFundMe pages for those financially affected by Fyre Festival’s failure - in particular, the Bahamians who were never paid. And he does not show signs of slowing down. King has hinted that he has had several reality TV show offers as well as a plethora of interviews to dig deeper into Fyre Festival. Perhaps he has even more wild stories to share that can go viral.
By now, the Fyre Festival and its horrific failures have reached the masses and the Netflix documentary, Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened is more of a success than the event itself. Many of the characters involved, including King, have risen from the ashes of the carnage and moved on with their lives. When King told his story he felt it was insignificant and that it might taint his name. Instead, King turned an embarrassing incident into a way to repair what was broken by the deception and lies of Fyre Festival.
