FX CEO John Landgraf comments again on the cancelled Deadpool animated TV show that was in development from Donald Glover and Stephen Glover, blaming Marvel for it not happening. FX Networks and Marvel TV officially announced the animated Deadpool TV show in May 2017, with both companies seemingly excited to work together on another project following the critical hit Legion. Donald and Stephen Glover were attached to the TV series from the beginning.
However, less than a year after it was announced, the Deadpool animated TV show was scrapped, with a statement from the companies revealing it was cancelled due to “creative differences.” The decision had no effect on the companies’ relationship and Legion continued on. Some fans blamed Donald Glover’s busy schedule for the show being cancelled, but that turned out not to be the case. Now, Landgraf sheds further light on the situation, revealing it was Marvel’s decision to axe the project.
During his executive session at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, Landgraf was asked about the scrapped Deadpool animated series. He said, “Deadpool didn’t work out because Marvel didn’t want to make it. It didn’t fit what they wanted to do with Deadpool and it’s their brand and their decision.” Landgraf’s latest comments fall in line with what he previously said at the 2018 TCA summer press tour, where he confirmed FX would have gone ahead with the Deadpool show had it been their decision. However, Marvel retains the TV rights and, ultimately, it was their decision.
It’s long been suspected that either Marvel, or their parent company Disney, pulled the plug on Glover’s Deadpool TV show. But why exactly the company made that decision, and what they’ll do with the property, is still unclear. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld offered hope that an adult animated series is still in the cards, revealing earlier this year that a Marvel executive promised him a Deadpool “cartoon.” Though, of course, no further details were revealed.
Since Marvel has the TV rights to Deadpool, it’s possible the company will eventually develop and release an animated show about the Merc with a Mouth. Certainly, considering how successful 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool movies have been, there’s more interest than ever in the character - though an animated version played by someone other than Ryan Reynolds may confuse casual audiences. Perhaps once the Disney and Fox deal closes, Marvel can figure out a way to keep the big screen Deadpool alive while additionally producing a small screen adult-oriented animated version. However, whether a Deadpool animated TV show ever comes together, and who will be involved in creating it, remains to be seen.
