The first teaser trailer for Frozen 2 was recently released, so Screen Rant’s Ryan George is celebrating by revealing what (probably) happened in the original pitch meeting for Frozen. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale The Snow Queen (but honestly bearing only a vague resemblance to it), Frozen sees royal sisters Anna and Elsa divided - first figuratively, and then literally - by Elsa’s incredible ability to create ice and snow.
Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Frozen was released in 2013 and immediately became an unavoidable phenomenon, with parents everywhere forced to listen to “Let It Go” on repeat until the lyrics were indelibly etched on their brains. Needless to say, it was a staggering success at the box office, grossing more than $1.27 billion worldwide.
Like a lot of Disney’s modern animated movies, including Tangled and Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen takes time to mock the tropes of classic Disney movies. Most notably, the big twist of the movie is that the charming Prince Hans is actually a villain - proving that deciding you’ve fallen eternally in love with a guy after singing a single duet five minutes after meeting him isn’t a great idea. But enough about that; seriously, what is the deal with the talking snowman?
As mentioned above, Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven the Reindeer are all set to return in Frozen 2, whose teaser trailer made it look like the kind of moody and brooding sequel that The LEGO Movie 2 recently parodied. The trailer was also vague enough that it sparked a whirlwind of fan theories - for example, that Anna and Elsa’s mother also had superpowers, or that Anna and Elsa’s parents aren’t really dead and Anna’s repeated efforts to run across the ocean are actually attempts to reach them.
Of course, there are a lot of mysteries still left over from Frozen that might be solved in the sequel - like the question of where Elsa’s powers came from, and how exactly she’s capable of creating sentient life by pure accident, or where exactly the King and Queen were heading when their ship was wrecked, or who ran the kingdom while Elsa was locked up and brooding in her room for years, or what happened to Kristoff’s parents, or where Elsa went to the toilet when she was living in her ice castle, or…
Well, you get the idea. We have questions.
