Last month’s Frozen 2 is now, officially, the third Disney animated film ever to make $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The Mouse House has had quite the banner year at the cinema in 2019. Last week even saw the company setting a monumental new record, as it was revealed they earned a record-setting $10 billion at the worldwide box office this year, becoming the first studio in history to do so. Alongside Frozen 2, Disney had five other movies that crossed the billion-dollar threshold at the box office in 2019: Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Toy Story 4.

During its opening weekend, Frozen 2 set the bar high by debuting with a brand new opening weekend box office record. It remained at the top of the box office in the weeks to follow and last weekend officially saw Frozen 2 crossing the $1 billion mark, joining Disney’s other billion-dollar earners from this year. The highly-anticipated animated sequel managed to hit $1 billion after just four weeks, whereas its predecessor took 15 weeks to reach the billion-dollar mark. Not only was this an incredible accomplishment for Walt Disney Animation and the team behind Frozen 2, but they’ve managed to set even more records heading into the holiday season.

According to Disney, Frozen 2 has become the “third Walt Disney Animation Studios film to reach the billion-dollar mark.” To celebrate, Walt Disney Animation released a short video clip that acknowledges the global phenomenon that is Frozen and how the film has touched so many people since its debut in 2013. The clip shows a variety of individuals involved with the production – including cast members Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff – expressing what the film has meant to them and how incredible the reception has been. Check out the full video below.

Alongside Frozen 2, Zootopia and the first Frozen are the other two films that made over $1 billion for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Zootopia went on to make $1.024 billion at the worldwide box office and Frozen made $1.276 billion worldwide. Frozen was even the highest-grossing animated film of all time until it was dethroned this year by Disney’s live-action reimagining of The Lion King. But, if Frozen 2 continues its box office streak, Elsa and Anna could easily reclaim that top spot.

Considering Frozen 2 continues to raise the bar at the box office after just four weeks of being released, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the animated feature set even more records going into the new year. Even if it does, it doesn’t appear that a third film will be in the works anytime soon. Despite its positive reception and incredible box office pull, filmmakers Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee have expressed that both films now feel like a complete story, and it wouldn’t make sense at the moment to add more to it. This is understandable, especially since the film even ends with a joke about concluding the franchise. Regardless, the success of Frozen 2 is well-deserved, and it’s exciting to see Walt Disney Animation reaching new heights with such an incredible film.
