Fans are excited to see the newly announced movie in the Friday The 13th series (via MovieWeb) planned now that the legal battles for the franchise have ended; how will Jason look and what weapons will be used? Part of what makes Jason such an iconic slasher is his affinity for turning nearly any object into a deadly weapon.

  • After so many years, fans of Friday The 13th had almost lost hope that they’d ever see their favorite hockey mask-wearing slasher villain ever again. However, a new Friday The 13th reboot has been announced, which will make the 13th film in the franchise, a fitting number for such a valiant return.

He does have his signature weapon but for over 40 years, Jason Voorhees has remained inventive. In every entry, Jason has killed the bystanders at Camp Crystal Lake with a wide variety of weapons. Some of these kills have led to the weapon of choice becoming iconic in the series.

Hacksaw

Friday The 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter (1984)

The first kill of Friday The 13th Part IV takes a while to happen, but the wait is worth it to see the scumbag coroner get his comeuppance when Jason Voorhees wakes up and begins his new killing spree. This time, he starts with a surgical hacksaw on the coroner, going right for the neck from behind.

Freddy’s Claw Arm

Freddy Vs. Jason (2003)

In most crossover movies featuring two icons battling, there is usually a cop-out to refrain from a definitive winner to keep fans of both sides happy. However, in Freddy Vs. Jason, Jason Voorhees turns out to be the winner.

He not only tears off Freddy’s arm featuring the iconic claw glove, but he deals the last blow of the fight, impaling it right through Freddy’s chest. A fitting end for Jason in the film, using his creativity to defeat his greatest nemesis since Tommy Jarvis.

Hedge Shears

Friday The 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)

Technically, this is not really Jason Voorhees in Friday The 13th Part V, but it’s still a famous weapon that was even brought into Friday The 13th The Game with one of the best Jasons. The Jason imposter sneaks up to a naked woman and jams the blades of the shears into her eyes. He then brings the blades together for a brutal kill.

It’s a shame that the MPAA watered the death down but it at least was a more effective off-screen kill thanks to the gory sound design. The hedge trimmers never returned in the film series, making it a unique weapon for A New Beginning.

Fireplace Poker

Various

Twice has the fireplace poker been Jason’s weapon of choice; Cheri in Friday The 13th Part 3 was the first to die from the poker, being stabbed with a flaming red-hot poker through the stomach as she was panicking.

The second use of the poker came in the 2009 Friday The 13th reboot when Jason impaled the poker through the police officer’s eyeball and skull to effectively nail the man to the front door of the house. It’s such a normal item, but many tend to forget how deadly a fireplace poker can be in the wrong hands.

Liquid Nitrogen

Jason X (2001)

Fans who both like and dislike Jason X for how much it jumps the shark can admit that the liquid nitrogen kill was effective. Just as a couple is getting intimate somewhere on the ship, it seems to wake Jason up like he just whiffed smelling salts. Jason X brings about the most iconic kill of the movie when Jason surprises Adrienne as she works.

After she struggles for a bit, Jason finished the job by forcing her face down into a sink of liquid nitrogen. From inside the sink, the audience actually watches her face freeze up before Jason brings her back out. That could have been fine enough, but then he slams Adrienne’s head against to counter to see her face shatter. Even Jason Voorhees knows that science can be fun and lethal.

Wood Chopping Ax

Various Movies

A seemingly basic weapon, but Jason has actually used this one many times across the long line of Friday The 13th movies. It was used by Jason before he even found his famous machete. It can be seen being used by Jason Voorhees across eight different movies including the reboot. This makes the ax the second most often used weapon by Jason.

It was also used to give Jason his famous crack in his mask in Friday The 13th Part 3. One of the best ax kills would come from The New Blood when he kills the bully character Melissa Paur with an ax right into her face before throwing her across the room.

Pickaxe

Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981)

Though the machete is the weapon most people remember, it was not Jason’s first weapon, showing how much the killer has changed over the years. In Friday The 13th Part 2, Jason’s sack mask and weapon highly resemble The Town That Dreaded Sundown’s masked killer. To fit within that look, Jason wielded a pickaxe.

In Part 3, Jason went through a massive overhaul and the pickaxe was no longer a go-to weapon. Instead, the weapon would go on to be wielded by Henry Warden in My Bloody Valentine. However, Jason still does use a pickaxe in Friday The 13th The Game.

Uber-Machete

When Jason is revived using nanotechnology, he sports a brand new cybernetic look. With this look came a new machete; it was meant to look futuristic, but the truth is that it’s simply another type of machete with a chrome finish.

This type of machete is known as a tapanga and the only thing giving it a sci-fi aesthetic is the custom handle. Uber Jason’s machete is much like Uber Jason himself: a ridiculous and unfitting but fun addition to the series. Sadly, it and Uber Jason were canceled from appearing in the game due to legal issues.

Fence Post

Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

In Jason Lives, the titular character was back from the grave, and he was gathering equipment as he went. His very first weapon as an undead killer is what brought him back to life: a metal fence post that acts as a lightning rod right into his body.

Jason uses the fence post as a spear which not only makes for an iconic pose but two kills in a row. The fence post sadly never made a return in the movies but is in Friday The 13th The Game as Part VI Jason’s standard weapon.

Tree Trimming Saw

Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

One thing to note about Jason Voorhees: he keeps his ingenuity to static weapons and tools. The only time Jason used a motorized tool for the killing was in the underrated Part VII: The New Blood. In the second act, Jason chases the evil Dr. Crews and finally kills him by sawing open his stomach with the tool.

It’s a satisfying kill to a character that definitely deserved his fate, but would have been better if left uncensored by the MPAA. The saw is another one-hit wonder that only appeared in The New Blood.

Spear Gun

Jason’s first weapon after gaining the iconic hockey mask that he is known for. In Friday the 13th Part 3, Jason tricks the surprisingly likable Vera into thinking he is Shelly who is playing yet another prank. With perfect accuracy, Jason fires a spear right into Vera’s eye thus killing her.

In Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason would use a spear gun again right in the opening. First, he fires and misses with the spear, so Jason impales a man with the spear gun itself. Jason would then wield the spear by hand to kill the man’s girlfriend.

The Sleeping Bag

Jason Voorhees will literally use anything as a weapon. In The New Blood, with one of the most brutal kills in the series, Jason drags a woman in her sleeping back out of her tent. As she struggles, Jason swings the sleeping bag against the tree thus shattering the woman’s skeleton.

This kill became so famous that Jason X would homage it and the reboot would feature a different kind of sleeping bag kill. Even in Friday The 13th The Game, the sleeping bag kill can be done. It could easily be considered the most iconic death in the series.

The Machete

No matter what, the machete will always be Jason’s most famous weapon. In Part 2, Jason uses a different kind of machete to kill Mark, known as a golok. Meanwhile, the classic Latin machete that most think of was used to kill Pamela Voorhees in part one and wound Jason in Part 2.

From Part 3 all the way to the 2009 remake, Jason can always be seen with a Latin machete. Despite coming later than one might expect, it is the weapon everyone thinks of. It’s on posters, merchandise, and is even the prop given with Halloween costumes every year.
