UPDATE 5/11/19: Constance Wu has since released a statement clarifying her negative response to Fresh Off The Boat’s renewal. Our original story follows.

Star of ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat, Constance Wu, is seemingly unhappy about the show’s season 6 renewal, voicing her “dislike” on social media sites. Since the show’s beginning, Wu has co-starred on the family comedy as matriarch Jessica Huang. She’s joined in the series by Randall Park as Jessica’s husband Louis, who owns a Western-themed steakhouse restaurant in Orlando, Florida. Together, Jessica and Louis raise their three sons: Eddie (Hudson Yang), Emery (Forrest Wheeler), and Evan (Ian Chen).

Based loosely on the memoir of the real-life Eddie Huang, Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir, the TV sitcom about an Asian-American family was created by Nahnatchka Khan (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23) and premiered in 2015. Recently, ABC renewed Fresh Off the Boat for season 6, but one of the series’ stars doesn’t seem happy about it.

On Twitter, Wu posted two tweets, with the first reading, “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. F-ck,” and the second simply, “F-cking hell,” sparking discussion regarding what she could be talking about. Further, in response to someone saying her show’s renewal is “great news,” Wu said, “No it’s not.” On Instagram, Wu left a comment on the Fresh Off the Boat official announcement video for season 6, which reads “Dislike.” Variety posted screenshots of Wu’s responses on Twitter and Instagram, which can be viewed below; she’s since deleted both comments.

According to Variety, 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the series, declined to comment on the matter. Wu has since commented on her response to Fresh Off the Boat’s renewal and the attention it received from others on social media: “Y’all are making a lot of assumptions about what I was saying. And no, it’s not what it’s about.” In a reply on Twitter, Wu wrote, “I said I was upset and crying. I did not say it was over a tv show. You’re making an assumption.” See Wu’s tweet below.

On social media, fans of Fresh Off the Boat and Wu have speculated about what may have inspired the actress to publicly voice frustration with the series. Some speculate that Wu wants to make the jump to film full-time after the success of her 2018 romantic comedy, Crazy Rich Asians. She’s currently expected to reprise her starring role as Rachel Chu for the two Crazy Rich Asians sequels, which will film back-to-back next year. Others have wondered if Wu’s response to the Fresh Off the Boat renewal is due to the show’s quality. Showrunner Khan is set to depart Fresh Off the Boat after leaving Fox TV for a four-year deal at Universal.

But some critics of Fresh Off the Boat have pointed to a decline in the show’s quality prior to Khan’s departure. Slate writer Inkoo Kang wrote a piece in November 2018 about how Wu’s character Jessica has changed on Fresh Off the Boat over the years (Kang shared the piece again on Twitter in light of Wu’s response to the season 6 renewal). Kang writes:

Since some of Wu’s social media posts in the wake of Fresh Off the Boat’s renewal are cryptic enough that they may be about something else entirely, the since-deleted comments don’t leave much room for interpretation. It’s unclear what motivated Wu to make these comments, and it remains to be seen if she’ll explain her thoughts in more detail. Still, it appears Fresh Off the Boat season 6 is moving forward at ABC.

Fresh Off the Boat has made Jessica into something that was unimaginable just two years ago: a petulant, off-putting idiot. And since Jessica was by all accounts the show’s most interesting character, her decline has correspondingly tanked the show’s watchability. … But Fresh Off the Boat didn’t slide in quality in any old way. It plummeted by torpedoing Jessica, its closest incarnation of a willful and proud otherness.
